Koik family
Hans (Ans) Koik
c. 1780–1834
Hans Koik is the earliest known ancestor of the Koik line. Born about 1780, he was a farmhand at Kama Peter farm on the Vana-Kariste estate in 1811, before peasants there had surnames. In the list of peasants released from serfdom in January 1825 he and his wife Kert are named “Koik”, the first appearance of the family name. He died of a fever on 25 January 1834 (Old Style) and was buried at Halliste.

Notes
- Neighbourhood: the Alt-Karrishof Wackenbuch of 1805–06 (EAA.567.3.240 img 5; SL-168) lists "Kamma Petri Hans" (the farm holder, not our Hans) and the two Koiksaar farms ("Koiksaar Jann", "do. Hans") one after another in the village (Dorf) Maerraste. In 1811 the Koiksaar farms are Nos. 45 and 46, directly after Kama Peter (44); nobody at Nos. 44–46 bears a "Koik" byname, and Koiksaar was a farm name by 1795 at the latest. The family therefore lived in the same hamlet as Koiksaare, but at Kama Peter.
- Death: Halliste yearly book 1834, EAA.1275.1.102 img 45 (p. 42/43), deaths No. 46: "Altkarris, Hans Koik, Wirths Vater", married, d. 25 Jan 1834 evening, buried 30 Jan, aged 58, Hitzfieber (SL-157). He is not in the pre-1834 Alt-Karrishof burial lists (EAA.1275.2.7, viewer img 299–306); the research’s "Koiksare Hanso … Lena" there is a 7-week-old girl, not his. Ages: 58 at death against 46 in 1826 and 44 in Jan 1825; the revisions are preferred (b. about 1780).
- Children's birth dates: Hendrik 26 Dec 1803, Peter 10 Aug 1806, Hans 12 Sep 1815, Märt 7 Sep 1821; the widow Kert b. 1778.
- Surname by Jan 1825. The surnames were written into the 1822–26 release lists (EAA.931.1.18–.24). Alt-Karrishof farm holders already had surnames in Jan 1823; Hans appears first in the third-wave list of Jan 1825 because he was not a farm holder. So Koik was probably taken in 1822–23 (medium). Three households on Kama Peter had three different surnames (Jein, Murro, Koik), which counts against a name taken from the farm. The lists give no reason for the name.
- The 1825 children's ages (Tina 19, Hans 9) differ from the 1826 revision (Tina 11, Ans 11): compare the two pages side by side.
- A farmhand, not a farm holder. In 1811 he was a Knecht at Kama Peter; the holder was another Hans ("Kama peter Hans", b. about 1757), whose relationship to him is not stated. No one called Koik, as forename or byname, appears at Kama Peter or Koiksaar in 1811, and no Koik lived at Koiksare before 1850.
- Märt Koik's father; his own father was also a Hans. New person. Daughters Anne (b. about 1813), Tina (b. about 1815) and Els (b. about 1820) are not given separate files yet. His death (1826–1834) is not yet found in the Halliste burials. Dead by Mar 1845 (Märt's marriage entry: both parents dead). Research note: the pre-1834 Alt-Karrishof death lists are in EAA.1275.2.7, images 300–306; image 301 has no Hans Koik; images 302 (lower half) to 306 still to read.
